For 14 years, Alice Weiss has captained the Neptune II, leaving Long Beach to navigate three miles out to sea, where Captain Weiss respectfully memorializes each person while conducting the scatterings. Captain Weiss, a licensed minister, has deep respect for her task, marking the precise longitude and latitude of each scattering at sea so that families may later visit the location.
Neptune Society also offers formal scattering at sea memorials where a family and friends, up to 80 people, may join the captain on the journey to sea and participate in a memorial designed only for their loved one. The captain, serving as minister, will conduct a service at the scattering site.
As part of its dedication to honoring those who served our country, Neptune Society Sherman Oaks, arranges services following a veteran cremation and concurrent with the scattering at sea. The military presents a flag to the family and plays Taps from the dock prior to the boat leaving for the service.
