

She was born in St. Inigoes, MD to the late William Bryan Knott and Alice J. Knott. Following Graduation from Great Mills High School, Lexington Park, MD, she became a civil service employee of the U.S. Air Force at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, GA, the U.S. Army at the Quartermaster Research and Engineering Center in Natick, Mass. and the U.S. Navy at the Naval Air Test Center, in Patuxent River, MD. Here she met her husband retired U.S. Navy Commander, Harold B. "Bunk" Johnston, Jr.
She served as head of the household, as a Navy wife, while her husband was deployed and after many military moves, she and her family finally settled in the Kings Grant neighborhood of Virginia Beach. It was during this time she became a long time employee of Doctors Leslie B. Gore and Arthur A. Nido.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years; her beloved children; daughter, Darcy J. Coles and husband Randall, son Harold B."Ben" Johnston III; and much loved grandchildren, Brayden Benjamin Johnston and Tristan Lee Johnston, all of Virginia Beach, VA; relatives Mary Lou Wimberly and her sons, Travis and Jason; Randy Wimberly, his wife Bonnie, and their daughters Shelby and Bridgett; as well as her extended family in Virginia Beach; the Falls and the Watkins.
A reception to allow family and friends to celebrate the life of Betty Lou will be held at 901 Prince Phillip Drive Virginia Beach, VA 23452 from 2-4pm Sunday Oct 5th, 2025. Inurnment with her husband will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA at a future date. The Neptune Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
