Born on January 2, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, Mel was the son of Samuel and Belle Schwartz. He lived a happy childhood growing up with his older sister, Lenore. At age 17, driven by a strong sense of duty and a desire to serve his country, Mel enlisted in the Navy. He loved talking about his time in Guam, a chapter of his life he carried with great pride.
After completing his service, Mel found the love of his life. He married his wife, Rhoda, and the two shared 62 years together. Both from Brooklyn, they were a perfect match — Rhoda’s quick wit and Mel’s sarcastic humor kept life endlessly entertaining. Mel always had a witty remark and a lighthearted twist in conversation that welcomed those around him with his charm and good nature.
Mel was an avid football fan, devoted to both the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. He and Rhoda’s shared love of football began with Giants tickets received as a wedding gift, and they remained enthusiastic season ticket holders for years — first in New York and New Jersey and later in New England after relocating to the area.
Together, Mel and Rhoda began their lifelong journey with the common New York drive and resilience they both knew well, working hard to build a life while raising their three daughters, Meryl, Sharon, and Debra. Mel embarked on a successful career in sales, where his dedication, discipline, and people skills allowed him to thrive. He worked long days to provide for his family, always striving to give them opportunities and a life filled with stability and love.
His hard work and determination ultimately led Mel to an early retirement, and the two made their home in Florida, embracing the sunshine and all it had to offer. He spent his days traveling with Rhoda and their dear friends to many grand destinations. He loved sharing those vacations with his children and grandchildren — especially the magical trips to Disney World that created so many cherished memories.
Mel truly cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. Their laughter, milestones, and love brought him immense pride and a heart full of happiness. He embraced his role as grandfather and great-grandfather with the same devotion and warmth that defined every aspect of his life.
Melvyn was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Belle Schwartz; his beloved sister, Lenore; and his cherished wife, Rhoda (Azlant) Schwartz.
Melvyn is survived by his three daughters, Meryl Haff; Sharon Rogers and her partner, David; and Debra Wolfe and her husband, Dustin. He was a proud and loving “Poppy” to Jena Shepley and her husband, Tom; Brian Rogers and his fiancée, Lizzy; Hannah Wolfe; Olivia Wolfe and her fiancé, Brandon; Ryan Haff and his wife, Molly; and Jason Edgar and his wife, Mercedes. He was also a cherished great-grandfather to Joelle and Cameron Shepley; Charlie Haff; and Griffin, Myles, and Roselyn Edgar.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather — Poppy will be forever in our hearts.
