Laurence (Larry) Klane, 86, of Sharon, MA passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton on Sunday, May 4, 2025. He was born on August 21, 1938, in Port Jefferson, New York, to the late Dr. Edward and Adele (Blum) Klane. Larry was preceded in death by his younger brother, Robert Klane.
Larry grew up in the ocean town of Patchogue, NY where he developed his love of the sea and boating. He attended The Stony Brook School for Boys, where he went on to graduate from Hofstra University, in Hempstead, New York.
On June 5, 1960, Larry married the love of his life, and soulmate, Bonnie dee Knight, to whom he was married for 64 years. Before beginning his professional life, he served four years in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge in 1966. Upon discharge, he settled in West Peabody, MA where he began a lifelong career in operations management. In 1970, Larry and Bonnie and their children came to Sharon where he lived until his passing. Larry followed the Jewish faith and was a member of Temple Sinai for several years, including the men’s club. He was a man of few words but of many talents. He loved to sail on Lake Massapoag in Sharon as well as off the coasts of Newport and Jamestown, Rhode Island. He served as the Commodore of the Massapoag Yacht Club and helped expand the sailing community in and around Sharon. At home, Larry was a lawn and garden enthusiast and an amazing handyman who took on all projects big and small. He loved the outdoors and maintained a wide array of plants, flowers, trees and shrubbery as well as several bird feeders and a fishpond. He was a “conservationist” long before it was fashionable.
Not long after Larry’s initial retirement, he founded his business, HOUSECALLS BY LARRY, and was a small job specialist. He was loved by his customers as much for his kind, warm and helpful personality as for the quality work he provided.
Larry volunteered for Meals on Wheels, delivering meals to Sharon residents. He was a member of the Masons as well as the AARL. But most of all, Larry was a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather and friend. Everything he did was guided by an unwavering moral and ethical compass. He led by example and was truly selfless, never requiring praise or recognition. He knew what was right and he did it. He was nicknamed “St. Larry” because of his great kindness to all, “Creatures, great and small”.
He was surprisingly funny and exhibited a timely, sarcastic and witty sense of humor with a sometimes-colorful vocabulary. Larry leaves his adored wife Bonnie; sons, Andy Klane of Sandwich and Scott (Karen) Klane of Dallas, TX; granddaughters, Gabrielle and Rachael Klane; grandsons, Joshua (Jenny), Branden (Claudia), and Brett Gentz and Jacob Klane; great-grandchildren, Claire, Quinn and Gray Gentz, as well as numerous extended family members and very dear friends. His little Yorkshire Terrier, Sofie, was always by his side.
A private Celebration of Life for Larry will be held on May 27th. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association.
