Chuck enlisted in the United States Navy at age 20 and served for 8 years aboard the submarine U.S.S. Patrick Henry, during the Vietnam War. He met the love of his life, Kirsti Aarnio Gamage, and they were married on July, 24, 1971. Chuck went to college as an adult student and graduated from UMass Boston with a major in Economics in 2.5 years. He then received his Master’s degree from MIT Sloan School of Management. He built a successful career at Digital Equipment Corporation and later as a consultant.
Chuck was a deeply curious and philosophical man, passionate about spirituality, history, politics, economics, technology, people and communities. He had a knack for creating beauty in simple things, such as fashioning bird feeders from milk cartons and delighting in the creatures that visited his yard. Chuck embodied what it means to be a good and caring person. He was kind and loyal, and his thoughtfulness and deep intellect inspired those around him. He was a devoted member of the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church and, for the last 5 years, First Parish Church of Groton.
Above all else, Chuck’s heart belonged to his family. He and Kirsti shared 53 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Matthew and Eric, father-in-law of Jennifer and Amy, and proud grandfather of Boden, Immy and Albus “Albie” Charles, born 2 months ago.
Chuck’s life was full of love and gratitude, leaving a legacy of kindness. His life will be celebrated at First Parish Church of Groton, Sunday, January 12 at 2 pm.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Charles will be held Sunday, January 12, 2025 at 2:00 PM at First Parish Church of Groton, 1 Powderhouse Road, Groton, MA 01450.
