Barbara Denis-Fleurant, 91, affectionately known as "Mumzi" and "Nina" to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, in Burlington, MA. Born in Claremont, NH, the daughter of Wylie and Ada Osgood, she was the youngest of six children. Her early years during the Great Depression helped shape a life defined by resilience, dedication, and an unwavering love of family and community.
Barbara graduated with honors from Windsor High School in Vermont. Following graduation, she began her career at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Windsor, working her way up to the position of Executive Secretary. As her family grew, Barbara left the workforce to focus on raising her family. She embraced this chapter wholeheartedly, serving as a classroom mother, Girl Scout leader; and head of household to four adolescent daughters after becoming widowed.
Later in life, she returned to work, taking on positions in home mortgage underwriting and eventually bank management while living in Cumberland and Smithfield, RI. Both her personal and professional journeys reflected her determination, strength, and adaptability.
Barbara was a devoted member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 63 years. She maintained her membership with the Windsor Vermont Legion Auxiliary Unit 25; and held numerous leadership positions within the organization, including Vermont Department President and National Executive Committee Woman. One of her proudest accomplishments was directing the Vermont Girls State Program for several years, during which she revised and strengthened the program to ensure its continued success. During this time, she was also honored with a personal invitation to dinner at the White House.
Her faith was central to her life. Barbara was an active member of the Congregational Church in Windsor, VT, and later Wesley United Methodist Church in Lincoln, RI, where she co-chaired the annual Christmas Bazaar for many years.
In retirement, Barbara embraced life to its fullest; living in Naples, FL, where she spent leisurely days at the beach with friends, painted landscapes, created crafts, and traveled extensively. Family gatherings were among her greatest joys; holidays, birthdays, and special occasions provided opportunities to bring loved ones together.
Barbara's warmth extended far beyond her immediate family. Known for her impeccable style and boundless energy (earning her the nickname "The Energizer Bunny") she had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome. Whether entertaining guests or spending time with friends, Barbara ensured that those around her felt comfortable, valued, and included.
She is survived by three daughters: Marilyn Harris of Claremont, NH, and Naples, FL; Susan Crosby (Robert McKenna) of Rockport, MA; and Jan Gilmore (Robert) of Warwick, RI; nine stepchildren; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three spouses, Dean Read, Ed "Papa" Denis, and Francis Fleurant; her parents; daughter, Kim Read; son-in-law, Carl Harris; five siblings, John, James Daryl, Marion (Thelma), Hilda, and Audrey; one stepson and several nieces and nephews.
Barbara's legacy is one of love, service, resilience, and determination. Her example as a mother, community leader, social organizer, and friend continues to inspire all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who cherished her presence in their lives.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Big Brothers, Big Sisters Foundation of RI, 188 Valley St., Ste 125, Providence, RI 02909 (BIGSRI.org) or the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, PO BOX 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
