Susan was born on March 9, 1955, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Karl Eugene Anderson and Mildred Elizabeth (Newman) Anderson. She attended Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa, where she met LeRoy Greenlee. The two later married and were blessed with three sons: John, Bradley, and Gregory.
Throughout her working years, Susan spent many years working in a dentist’s office in Guthrie Center, Iowa, and also worked at Hy-Line in Dallas Center.
Susan had a passion for photography, a hobby that brought her great joy, especially during retirement. She spent much of her time taking photography classes and enjoying day trips with friends, capturing the beauty of the world through her camera lens. One of her favorite places to photograph was the Botanical Center in Des Moines. Susan also loved music and shared her musical talents by playing the piano at church and serving as a choir director. Her love of music was another meaningful way she expressed her faith and shared her gifts with others. She also loved watching football with her sons and cheering on her favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers.
Above all, Susan treasured her family. She never hesitated to express how much she loved her three sons and their families, who were the greatest blessings in her life. To her family, she was affectionately known as “Nammels,” a special nickname her boys came up with when they were young. The name stayed with her throughout her life, and she loved the warmth and meaning it carried each time she heard it. Susan felt truly blessed by the family God had given her, and her faith and trust in Him brought her comfort throughout her life and in death.
Susan will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Karen (Rob) Hovey; her three sons, John (Danielle) Greenlee, Bradley (Becky) Greenlee, and Gregory (Mallory) Greenlee; her grandchildren, Matthew (Kalli), Lia (Nathan), Sheldon (Whitney), Addie, Tyler, Evelyn, Isaak, Lillian, Westley, Everett, Gabriel, and Cecilia; and her great-grandchildren, Emerson and Sutton. She is also survived by her longtime friend, Mike, whose companionship she greatly enjoyed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Mildred Anderson.
A memorial service celebrating Susan’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Capitol City Church, located at 5990 NE 14th Street in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service. Lunch will be served following the service.
Susan will be remembered for her deep love for her family, her joy in capturing life’s beautiful moments, her love of music and service to her church, and the faith that sustained her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
