Robert Lee Hoehle II, 79, died on January 9, 2025 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Lee and Edna Hoehle, and his younger sister, Eileen (Dan). He is survived by his wife, Ann; his sons Rob (Erin) and Jerry (Liz) from his first marriage (Marjorie); and ten grandchildren.
Bob was born in Chicago, and graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1963. He wrestled there for four years, three years on the varsity team. He received his B.S. in 1967 and his M.A., with an emphasis on behavioral disorders, in 1972 from the University of Iowa. Bob was committed to the belief that all children, including those with special needs, deserve an education. He worked and taught at Child Psychiatry Services at U of I Hospitals, and then was a specialist for children with emotional disabilities at the Midwest Educational Resource Center in Iowa City and then Des Moines. He was affiliated with Drake University on a federal grant starting in 1974 and joined the faculty of Drake in 1988 to teach Statistics and Research Methodology. Bob left briefly to receive his Ph.D. at Utah State University in 1993. Later he became Director of Microcomputer Services for Drake, and retired in 2006 after 32 years with the University.
Bob was loyal, humble, hardworking, and a strong blend of kindness and integrity. A great joy was his wife, Ann, and his family – two sons and their children: Whitney, Lindsey, Caleb, Cameron, Kenna, Paxton, Louie, Jazlyn, and honorary granddaughters Mia and Reese. Also he was an avid fisherman and as a boy fished with both his Grandpa Gast and his dad. With Ann’s dad he took fishing trips to Texas, Missouri and Canada and frequently to local farm ponds. While in Utah for Ph.D. work, Bob embraced bicycling, riding through the mountains there. In Iowa he did RAGBRAI for 17 years. He took up photography, loved animals and wildlife, and volunteered for the DNR, tracking peregrine falcons and bald eagles.
At his request, there will be no funeral; a remembrance for family will be held this spring. Contributions in his memory may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, or the Iowa DNR/Wildlife Diversity.
