Robert (Bob) Leroy Egenberger, Junior, age 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 19th, 2024. Born to Robert and Mildred (Darnell) Egenberger on August 24, 1946, Bob was a lifelong resident of Des Moines, Iowa.
Described by those he worked with as an extremely reliable and hard worker, Bob made a living in the asphalt construction business, never missing a day of work in his over 50-year career. Bob worked for Henningsen Construction for 35 years, retiring as their Des Moines area Project Manager. His work spanned the entire state of Iowa, including many of the bike trails he later enjoyed while riding his eBike with family and friends.
A man of many hobbies and interests, Bob took great pride in carrying on the Egenberger family tradition of making homemade sauerkraut that he loved sharing with others. An avid NASCAR fan, Bob enjoyed rooting for Dale Earnhardt Senior and later Junior. If he wasn't traveling and camping on site at these events as he often did, you could count on a race to be on TV in his garage, where he enjoyed building and restoring classic cars and hot rods. If it wasn't NASCAR on TV, it was likely the St. Louis Cardinals, as he was a big fan, especially when they were winning. Bob was a traveler and camper, so he was a natural crew captain on RAGBRAI, following his family across the state in his Class A RV to ensure they were well-fed, hydrated, and rested. Bob also enjoyed attending the Iowa State Fair and classic car shows, many of which he entered his own vehicles and received recognition. He was also a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 109, serving as president for two years. He was also a member of the Elks Club and Concrete Cruisers. Bob’s greatest joy came from supporting his grandchildren and cheering them on at their various events. He was beyond proud of their accomplishments and never missed the opportunity to let them and others know.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brothers John, Bill, and Tom. He is survived by his former wife, Angela Maynard and their children Hollie McCargar (Duke), Bryant Egenberger (Jennifer), Kelly Foss (Steve), Keely Rosenberg (Steven), former wife Kim Hogan and their son Austin Egenberger (Kellie), grandchildren Duke, Nick, Kassadie, Devin, Nile, Raquel, Gianni, Maleah, CJ, Lorelai, Bella, Aria, Zephinah, Cameron, great-grandchildren King, Dani, Kianni, sisters Marcia Stamper, Sue Meyers, Carol Mercer (Chandler, AZ), and life partner Marlene Bruch and his bonus family Tina (Cory) Berning and Edward (Carmen) Bruch, grandchildren Briley, Gavin, Ophelia, Everett, Langston.
A celebration of life and luncheon will take place at Fraternal Order of Eagles 109 in Des Moines, January 4th, from 1pm to 5pm, 6567 Bloomfield Rd, Des Moines, IA 50320.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary 109, in memory of Robert Egenberger, to be designated to a charity selected by the family.
