Richard embarked on his educational journey graduating from Mason City High School, later earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master's degree from Iowa State University. He began his career in education as a Special Education Teacher at Palmer Consolidated Schools and retired from Jefferson - Scranton Schools, where he profoundly impacted the lives of middle school students.
An avid outdoorsman, Richard cherished his time waterfowl and upland bird hunting, as well as fishing. His love for the outdoors was only matched by his passion for reading, particularly the works of Stephen King, and watching his favorite shows and sports, especially anything involving the Cyclones.
Richard's sense of humor and joy for life were evident in his love for road trips with friends, hunting and fishing adventures, sharing jokes with everyone he met, and time spent with his grandchildren, Alec and Alison Lester. He was a beloved figure among his family and those who remember him as a source of constant joy and companionship.
Richard was a member of the Jefferson Iowa Kiwanis Club, Greene County Ducks Unlimited, and the Altoona Lions Club.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Amy (David) Lester; grandchildren, Alec and Alison Lester; sisters, Patricia Auringer, Sue (Kirk) Knudtson, Kathy (Charlie) Schroeder; two nieces; and his friend, Neta Fullmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Green, Sr. and Dorothy Billings Green; and nephew, Hans Schroeder.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held on October 25, 2026, at Park Avenue Christian Church in Des Moines, IA. Visitation will take place from 3-5 pm, followed by a short service.
