Don was born on August 9, 1936, the son of the late Marvin and Francis Olson. Born in Wyoming, he spent much of his childhood in Des Moines before moving to Alma, Wisconsin, during high school. After graduating, Don proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served for four years.
It was in Alma that Don met the love of his life, Kay Vollmer. The two were married on June 29, 1963, beginning a life together centered around love, family, and the many memories they would make along the way. Together, they welcomed two children, Laurie Olson Reynolds and Troy Donald Olson.
Throughout his career, Don worked for Iowa Asbestos and was a proud member of Insulators Local 74.
More than anything, Don was a family man. His family was his greatest joy, and he had a way of making sure the people he loved knew just how important they were to him. He took a genuine interest in the lives of his children and grandchildren, always ready to hear a story, ask a question, share a little sass, or simply enjoy being together.
Don was also an exceptional babysitter to all of his grandchildren, creating memories with them that they will carry throughout their lives. Later, his promotion to great-grandfather became one of his most treasured roles. He eagerly looked forward to visits from his great-grandchildren, Amari and Mila, and the love between them was unmistakable.
Don enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and camping, and later in life found great enjoyment in watching the wildlife from his backyard. He also became known as the family’s unofficial historian, rarely without a video camera nearby. Whether it was a birthday, holiday, family gathering, or an ordinary day together, Don was always ready to capture the moment—usually with a smile on his face. Those countless photographs and videos are now treasured pieces of the life and family he loved so deeply.
Just weeks before his passing, Don was surrounded by family as they celebrated his 90th birthday. The celebration gave those closest to him the opportunity to gather, celebrate a remarkable milestone, and create a few more precious memories with him.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Kay Olson; daughter, Laurie (Bob) Reynolds; son, Troy (Bridget) Olson; grandchildren, Lindsey Reynolds, Nicole (Curtis) Sayon, Alexa Olson, Molly Olson, and Samantha Olson; great-grandchildren, Amari and Mila Sayon; brother, Jerry (Helga) Olson; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Francis Olson, and his brothers Cliff and John Olson.
Don will be remembered for his warm smile, his humor and sass, the memories he so carefully captured, and above all, the tremendous love he had for his family. His 90 years were filled with a life well lived and a family well loved. The memories he leaves behind—both those captured on camera and those held in the hearts of the people who loved him—will be cherished for generations to come.
A private family burial will be held in Alma, Wisconsin.
