John Doc "JD" Johnson

John Doc Johnson “JD”, age 92, passed away Friday, February 14, 2025, in Des Moines, IA. JD was born November 25, 1932, in Lewisville, Arkansas, to Paul Sr. and Sally (Gaither) Johnson. As a child the family moved to Iowa from Arkansas, JD graduated from North High School and was inducted in the Army in 1953. He was honorably discharged in 1955. JD worked for many years at Firestone Tires.

JD enjoyed family reunions on both the Gaither and Johnson family sides, memorably a family reunion cruise where he loved the balcony views and spending time with his family. He spent Friday nights dancing at the Blues on Grand, JD loved listening to the blues, notably the local band the Sumpin’ Doo’s.

Left to cherish his memory are JD’s sisters; Thresser Thomas, Mary (Sylvester) McCracken and Elizabeth (Carl) Limbrick; numerous nieces, nephews and greats; along with his many bonus children and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Sally Johnson; Son, Ricky Gatewood; sisters, Mattie Cutwright and Jessie Martin; brothers, Paul Jr and James Johnson Sr, and one nephew, Ernest Watson.

A memorial celebration of life will be held at 11AM, Saturday March 22nd at Union Baptist Church (1200 McCormick St Des Moines, IA 50316).
