Doris Irene Winebrenner, 80, of Des Moines, IA, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2025. She was born on March 13, 1944, in Boone, IA to John Henry and Mildred Lucille (Last) Harris. Doris was united in marriage to Clifford Bruce Winebrenner on January 6, 1967, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Doris attended Ogden High School until the 11th grade at which time she stayed home to support her father and three brothers. Doris’ first job was as a telephone operator working for Aunt Millie in Mohomet, IL. She spoke often about her work there and working the switch board with co-worker Larry Gilbert when the last call came in before the phone system went dial. She had various jobs later, including obtaining her CNA certification. Her favorite job was being “mom” not only to her two children, but to all of her kids friends as well.
Doris loved to crochet, she made everything from rugs, baby blankets, slippers and ice cream cone rattles to Christmas ornaments and air freshener doll dresses. She touched the lives of many people, including several she never met. Always wanting to do for others while seldomly asking for help herself. If Doris could make or cook something for anyone to put a smile on their face, she was happy.
Doris is survived by her son, David (Gail) Winebrenner, daughter, Denise (Larry) Hartsook; brother, Donald (Sharyn) Harris; sister-in-law, Dianne Harris; brother, Dennis (Marlys) Harris; sister-in-law, Karla Walters and many nieces and nephews.
