Darold Ernest Mapes, age 76, was called home by the Lord on October 6, 2023 at the Taylor Hospice House surrounded by his family and cheering on his beloved Cornhuskers. He was born on September 16, 1947 in Valentine, Nebraska to his loving parents, Frank and Adeline Mapes. He grew up in Nebraska surrounded by 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
Darold entered into marriage with Martha Engelsgaard on October 29, 1966. He was a dedicated and loving husband to his wife with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. He was a devoted father to his children, Darron, John and Ken, and a cherished grandfather to nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Darold was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to his family. He was in the Air Force stationed primarily in Austin, Texas for four years. He then worked at numerous beef plants. In 1978 the family moved to California and became a beef grader for the USDA and moved to market reporter for the USDA in 1988 until his retirement in 2009. He truly loved being a grandfather, whether it was attending every event possible or spending hours sharing his love of trains and board games. He loved genuine time and being present with the children in his life, and was known by his grandchildren for making the BEST pancakes. His passion for the Nebraska Cornhuskers was contagious, inspiring his children to carry on the tradition of cheering on the Big Red.
In his free time, Darold was an avid outdoorsman. He spent countless hours rockhounding, hunting, and fishing. With Marty he enjoyed square dancing, antiquing, and traveling. The two visited every state together and countless other destinations around the world. His favorite trips included passing through the Panama Canal and a long awaited tour of Australia.
Darold was a quiet and generous soul who always had a warm greeting for everyone he met. His wisdom, humor, and unwavering support were valued by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Marty and children, Darron (Marilee), John, and Ken (Carrie), and his adoring grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Survivors include his 3 brothers and two sister-in-laws Delmar Mapes of Austin Texas. Jim and Ann Mapes of Hemingford NE and Norman and Betty Mapes of Merriman NE He is preceded in death by his parents (Frank and Adeline), two sisters (Dolly and Nettie), and two brothers (Eugene and Dale Mapes).
A memorial service to celebrate Darold's life will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, luncheon to follow. Darold will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched.
