Carrie E Hoyla

Ellie was born on August, 25th 1922, in Derby, Iowa. She later moved to Des Moines, IA, graduating from Roosevelt High School. She proudly served her country in the United States Navy as a WAVE teletype operator from 1944-1945. During her military service, she met the love of her life, Anthony Hoyla, who was serving in the United States Air Force. They married in 1945 and built a life centered on love, family, and lasting memories.

Ellie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She liked playing bingo and cards, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends. She had a spirited personality and could be a spitfire when the moment called for, but those who knew her best will remember her as a loving, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose warmth, laughter, and love make every feel welcome.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Hoyla; her daughter, Katherine Wadle; five grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will cherish her memory. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her sister-in-law, her beloved husband, Anthony Hoyla, and several other cherished family members.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 29th, 2026, at Prairie Meadows. Family and friends are invited to come together to share stories, laughter, and memories while enjoying one of Ellie’s favorite pastimes-watching the horse races.

A private burial will be held at a later time.

Over the course of her 103 years, Ellie witnessed extraordinary changes in the world, but the things she valued most never changed: devotion to family, loyalty to friends, and finding joy in the moments spent together. Her life was a blessing to those who knew her, and her legacy will continue through the generations she loved so deeply. She will be missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of her family and friends.
