Sherry Jeannine (Davis) Vaughan
February 20, 1944
Sherry Vaughan of La Verne, California passed away at 2:30 A M at Pomona Valley Hospital.
Sherry was born on February 20,1944 in Xenia, Ohio. She was the daughter of Emerson Davis and Nelle Guthrie Davis of Xenia, Ohio and, later, Scottsdale, Arizona. She graduated from Xenia High School in 1962 and attended Bowling Green State University, graduating in 1966. Sherry earned a master's degree from Pepperdine University in April of 1978. Upon graduation with her B S Degree Sherry moved to California to teach third grade for the Bassett Unified School District in La Puente, CA. During her one year at Tonopah Elementary School, she met a fellow district teacher, Richard Vaughan. At the end of the school year, she moved back to Ohio to teach in the Miamisburg elementary school. During that year, she was in constant contact with Richard and on August 17, 1968, Sherry and Rich were married. Five days after their wedding, Sherry and Rich moved to Zweibrucken, Germany where Rich taught middle school math in the DOD School for Army personnel’s children. Sherry taught first grade soon after in the same school. After two years in Germany, Sherry and Rich moved back to California and taught for the Hacienda La Puente Unified Schools. Sherry taught from 3rd to 6th grade for several years at Valinda Elementary School before becoming a Resource Teacher, and then moved into a district position working with classroom teachers in developing strategies in teaching math, science and language arts. After teaching with HLPUSD for 34 years, Sherry retired in 2005. Sherry and Rich traveled for several years to many places they never dreamed that they would ever be able to visit.
Sherry leaves behind her husband, Rich, her daughter Jessica Vaughan Lower, Pastor/Head of Staff at San Marino Community Church (Presbyterian), herson-in-law Andy Lower, and her grandchildren Marloe and Levi, both high school students. Sherry had a great laugh and you would hear it often. She had a great sense of humor and put up with her husband’s weird sense of humor. She was a very good cook and enjoyed doing it. When planning a special dinner she would research her large collection of recipes and cook books much like an attorney getting ready for an important case. She enjoyed entertaining many holiday dinners and celebrations. We miss her very much.
A private service for family and friends will be held on July 13, 2025 for Sherry. Please inquire with the family if you would like to attend.
