It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Ross, a beloved family member, friend, and dedicated public servant, on December 29, 2024, at the age of 65.
Born on July 14, 1959, Richard spent much of his life devoted to serving others. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel during his tenure from 1975 to 1998. Richard proudly served with the 18th Airborne Corps, also known as America’s Contingency Corps, where his leadership and commitment to readiness exemplified his
dedication to service. Following his military career, Richard continued his service in the public sector as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State from 1998 to 2011. His passion for diplomacy and global cooperation led him to his role as a Diplomatic Counsel for the United Nations, where he served from 2012 until his retirement in 2018. Richard was an alumnus of Syracuse University, where he graduated in 1986, marking the beginning of a lifetime of learning and service. In his later years, he lived in Hawaii, where he embraced the beauty of the islands, and enjoyed traveling extensively during his early retirement.
He eventually resided in Los Angeles, California, where he reflected on a remarkable career and life well-lived. Richard had a great sense of humor that brought joy to everyone around him. He shared a special bond with his beloved service animal, Karma, who was his loyal companion and source of comfort
throughout his life. Richard is survived by his loving daughter, Rachel, and son-in-law, Jamie. He also leaves behind a network of cherished friends who became family throughout his life, each of whom enriched his journey and were touched by his warmth and generosity. He will now join his fallen fellow soldiers, his family, and his beloved wife, Michelle. His contributions to his community and country will be honored, signifying his enduring legacy of service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard’s memory to organizations supporting veterans and global diplomacy.
May his memory be a blessing. Aloha and hang loose.
