Charles “Chuck” George Gruhn passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of February 24, 2026. He was 55 years old. Chuck had recently retired as an Instructional Music Assistant from East Los Angeles College, capping a lifelong dedication to music education and performance.
Born in Huntington, New York, Chuck attended Northport High School before furthering his education at Ithaca College and earning his Master’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles. He began his teaching career in the Northport, Oceanside, and Three Village school districts on Long Island, where he inspired students through his passion for music. In 2001, he moved to Southern California and eventually made Whittier his hometown. He often said that the Uptown area reminded him of Northport, a place he held close to his heart.
Chuck loved discovering new restaurants and collecting treasures tied to his interests. He was a gifted storyteller, known for recounting memories in vivid detail, his sharp memory earning him the reputation of having a “steel trap” mind. He could grow teary-eyed when speaking about his childhood in New York and never passed up the opportunity to share a corny joke. His warm laugh and beautiful singing voice left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A devoted sports fan, Chuck cheered passionately for the Dodgers and enjoyed watching football and baseball. He appreciated life’s simple pleasures, including a well-made martini and a fine cigar. Beneath his humor and storytelling was a tender and generous soul. He quietly supported various charities and delivered food to individuals experiencing homelessness.
>>> Music remained at the center of Chuck’s life beyond the classroom. He volunteered and performed with the Northport Community Band, Huntington Community Band, sang in the Huntington Choral Society, and later played with the Monterey Park Community Band in California.
Chuck is survived by his beloved partner, Sophia Soliz; her daughter, Audrey Milhous; his mother, Linda; his father, Charles; and his sister, Laura. He will be deeply missed by family and friends both near and far.
