Janet M. Mattix
January 12, 1938 - May 18, 2023
Janet M. Mattix, 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 18th, 2023 in the care of Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton.
Janet was born in Fultonville, New York, attended Fultonville High School where she was named homecoming queen, prom queen, and served as a high school cheerleader. She graduated from Albany Business College, married William McQuade and moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana. There she raised two children, Kim and Kent, and worked as an administrative assistant for Haley Elementary School and Northrop High School. Later, Janet finished out her career working at the ITT Aerospace Defense Division.
In later years, Janet married Richard Mattix and they retired to Wild Oak Bay in Bradenton, Florida where they lived on beautiful Sarasota Bay for 25 years. Janet found that Florida was simply paradise. While in Florida, Janet worked part time for IMG Academies in the golf pro shop, and later volunteered in a local church Sunday school classroom. She also served as a volunteer usher for the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and as a volunteer ambassador at the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport for many years.
Janet was a warm, friendly, charismatic, feisty, fun-loving, social, and generous person. She loved to laugh, had many friends, and treasured her family. She was known as “Beach Girl” by her family because she enjoyed soaking up the warm Florida sunshine, strolling the seashore, hunting for seashells, bird-watching from her lanai and taking in the picturesque sunsets over the palm trees on Sarasota Bay. She also enjoyed traveling, entertaining, baking for the holidays, playing golf, card games, Scrabble, working puzzles and was an avid Wheel watcher.
Janet is survived in death by her two children Kim (Greg) Kerns and Kent (Angela) McQuade; and three stepchildren John (Julie) Mattix, Tom Mattix, and Holly (Kurt) Kramer. She was a proud grandmother to eight grandchildren, Brad (Kelly) Kerns and Ryan (Katie) Kerns, Kole and Kort McQuade, Kristy Mattix, Ella and Eva Kramer, and Carol Mattix; as well as four great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Zach Kerns, and Harper and Clara Kerns. She is also survived by two sisters, Joann (Bob) McQuade of Little Rock, Arkansas and Cheryl (Jeff) Wolever of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
A memorial service will be held at Crocker Memorial Chapel in Sarasota on Thursday, June 15th at 10am, followed by a burial service alongside her husband, Richard Mattix, at Sarasota National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Dayton.
