Born in Staten Island, New York, Walter attended Curtis High School, where he is remembered as a unifying member of the varsity football team. As a young man eager to find his footing, he started at the very bottom on Wall Street. Through determination and sharp instinct, he learned the business, navigated the industry's challenges, and made his own way to become a true success story. In 1983, his career brought him out west to California, where he continued his work within the industry and eventually made Antioch his home. Throughout his distinguished 45-year career, he operated with the utmost integrity, earning the highest level of respect among his peers and a reputation with company leadership as someone who was truly indispensable.
Walter was a devoted husband whose kindness, strength, generosity, and unwavering love touched all who had the privilege of knowing him. He treasured every single moment spent with his beloved wife, Denise, and their dogs. He will be forever remembered for his quick, witty sense of humor, generous spirit, and the huge heart underneath it all. A lifelong New York Yankees fan, he often cherished memories of watching games with his late father. Later in life, Walter became immersed in following and supporting women’s sports, while also enjoying a good novel and his favorite television shows. He found great joy in playing chess, cards, and golf, and spent many years both playing and coaching softball. Through it all, Walter was never afraid to speak his mind, always standing firmly by his opinions.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Denise; his loving sister, Mary Tardio (Richard); and his father-in-law, Dennis Fletcher (the late Carol). Walter was a devoted uncle who will be dearly missed by his nieces and nephews: Toni Lynn Decker (Lenny), AJ Decker, Katelyn Decker, LJ D’Alessandro, Philip Marino, Connor Thompson, Joseph Sayong (Antigone), and Stephanie Sayong (Catie); and his brothers-in-law: Parker Dennen (Stacey) and Ernie Sayong (the late Cindy).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Gladys Genovese, as well as his nephew, Ricky Thompson, and niece, Maureen Thompson. He also leaves behind many dear friends and colleagues.
Though our hearts are deeply broken, we take comfort in knowing that Walter’s legacy will continue through the lives of the many he touched. His memory will forever remain in our hearts, guiding and comforting us each day.
A small family service will be held on Staten Island in the near future.
