Harlan was born July 6, 1945 in Concord, CA to Harlan Bailey and Josephine Grossi Bailey. He spent his childhood in San Diego, Port Chicago and Martinez and was a graduate of Alhambra High School. Harlan served in the army from 1968-1971 and began his career as a commercial fisherman in 1975 in Bristol Bay, Alaska, where he spent 50 summers fishing for sockeye salmon. Harlan also spent many years fishing for herring in San Francisco Bay, and caught and sold live bait out of his bait shop in downtown Martinez, which he operated for a decade in the late seventies and early eighties. Harlan loved to read and write. He shared his essays in multiple venues around the Bay Area and was a regular at the annual Fisher-Poets Gathering in Astoria, OR.
Harlan was a lively, funny, interesting person, who loved to meet new people and was a friend to many. He is survived by Kathie Houdashell Bailey, his wife of 42 years, children Nigel Bailey and Martina Bailey (Patrick Weber), granddaughter Maren, and siblings Martin Bailey and Julia Bailey Boals. We will miss him deeply.
