Arthur Richard Carter, originally Arthur Ronald Carter, passed away on August 8th, 2023 in Walnut Creek, CA, USA. The youngest of six children, he was born on December 12, 1930 in Hendon, Middlesex, UK, where his family briefly relocated from London. Like so many of the children of London in his generation, he was briefly evacuated with his Sister Doll (Doris) during the war, before returning to spend the rest of his childhood in London. As a young man he performed national service in the British Army from March 1949 through October 1950. He later attended Central School of Speech and Drama in London and pursued a career in drama before emigrating to the United States in May of 1960, where he became a successful professional in the reinsurance industry, retiring from Guy Carpenter & Co in San Francisco in January 1993.
He is preceded in death by his Mother Helena Petronella Carter (nee van Rest), Father Arthur Carter, Husband Robert Adair Berkey Jr., Siblings Eleanor, Violet, William, Irene and Doris, Niece Joyce Rossi (nee Wilson) and Great-nephew Neil Askew. He is survived by Nieces and Nephews Margaret Turbutt (nee Hustwitt), Victor Hustwitt, William Wilson, Christine Brace (nee Wilson), Alan Kemp, Geoffrey Kemp, Kenneth Kemp, Linda Askew (nee Salmon), Reginald Salmon, Richard Salmon, and many beloved Great-nieces and Great-nephews. Richard’s ashes will be spread in the Pacific Ocean just beyond the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge on Thursday September 28th, 2023.
