Sue Kuhn Moorefield passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, surrounded by family in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 98. Born on September 9, 1928, in Beaufort, North Carolina, she was one of four children of Harvey and Elizabeth Kuhn. She was predeceased by brothers Isaac (Gilda) Kuhn and Alvin (Jean) Kuhn.
While attending Lenoir-Rhyne College, Sue met Carl S. Moorefield, a recently returned WWII veteran. They were married on September 15, 1949, and shared 64 wonderful years together until Carl’s passing at age 88. Together, they operated several businesses, with Sue actively supporting Carl in many ventures, most notably developing properties at Lake Anna, Virginia, where the family continues to gather every year at the beautiful lake house that Carl built.
Sue possessed an extraordinary talent for floral arrangement, finding immense joy in creating beauty and sharing it with others. She arranged flowers for the National Cathedral, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and Christ Lutheran Church, and decorated the hallways at Chancellor’s Village and Bay Lake. She was famous for composing flowers, twigs, and even weeds into artistic displays.
Sue was an avid reader, a crossword fanatic, and to her family's amusement, fond of playfully correcting poor grammar. Her adventurous spirit and zest for life were legendary. In recent summers, she went tubing behind a speedboat, danced to live music with the lead singer, and went for a jet ski ride! Everyone knew her quick wit and ready smile. Even a week before her passing, she could be seen warmly waving to everyone she passed in the halls at Bay Lake.
By Sue’s humble example, she taught her family to appreciate life’s small wonders and to prioritize love and generosity. She hosted hundreds of holiday meals, and was always quick to offer a helping hand, no matter how big or small the need. Anchoring her life was an unwavering faith in God, which served as her ultimate foundation.
She is survived by her sister, Betsy Brittain; her four children, Donna (Rick) Dellett, Melinda Moorefield (Dave Hanson), Carlton (JoAnne) Moorefield, and Amy (Charlie) Rahe; as well as 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry her legacy of love and generosity forward.
In celebration of Sue’s life and memory, donations may be made to Child Fund International, a charity she faithfully supported for over 60 years. Alternatively, you may honor her by giving a bouquet of flowers to someone you love—or even a stranger—to brighten their day. Her parting words were a reflection of how she lived - “Livin’ Lovin’ Life”.
A local Celebration of Life will be held at Bay Lake Assisted Living, 4225 Shore Dr, Virginia Beach VA, November 16th at 10:30 am. A second memorial service will be held July 19th at a location to be determined in or near Fredericksburg Virginia. All are welcome to attend either service.
