Paul Richard Thorpe, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, passed away on January 21, 2024, at home surrounded by his loved ones after a brief illness. He was 92 years old. Born on June 20, 1932, Paul lived a full and impactful life, marked by his unwavering dedication to family and country.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (nee Ferguson); his mother, Claire (nee Ryerson); his father, WK Thorpe; sister Jaqueline Thorpe; and nephews Fred and Paul Alexander. Paul is survived by his sister, Marguerite Thorpe; daughter, Cindy Bryerose and her husband, Michael Powell; son, Steven Thorpe; and his cherished grandchildren: Paul R. Powell and his wife, Shelia Powell, Dorothy A. Cuccaro and her husband, Dave Cuccaro, Andrew T. Powell, and Stephanie Casto and her husband, Bryan Casto. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Aiden and Noah Powell, Felix Cuccaro, and Mikey and Leo Casto, with a sixth great-grandchild, Baby Cuccaro, expected in April. Paul was also deeply loved by his extended family in New York, who affectionately referred to him as "Uncle Bud” including nieces Jana Taylor and Marta Sanders and their families.
Paul was a decorated veteran who served his country for more than 20 years in the United States Army. He completed two tours in both Korea and Vietnam, where he earned numerous commendations for his bravery and service. After retiring from the military, Paul found joy in working at local golf courses—his true passion. He continued to play and enjoy the sport well into his late 80s, and his love for fitness led him to remain active at the gym throughout his life.
A lifelong fan of both football and baseball, Paul’s heart belonged to his beloved Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. He imparted his passion for the game to his grandsons, Paul and Andy, who will carry the torch in his honor for years to come. Whether cheering on the Cowboys or the Yankees, Paul’s enthusiasm for sports was infectious and brought joy to those around him.
Paul was also known for his kindness, always being the first to offer a helping hand to those in need. His granddaughter, Dorothy, inherited his generous spirit and will continue to be an extension of her beloved granddaddy, spreading kindness and love wherever she goes.
A dedicated family man, Paul was known for his strong work ethic, his kindness, and his unwavering devotion to those he loved. He will be remembered for his warm heart, his generous spirit, and his commitment to living life to the fullest.
Paul’s family would like to extend their gratitude to all who offered support during this time of loss. Paul’s last request was to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are currently underway.
