Spike was born on August 11, 1928 to Edward Leroy Messick and Vivian Belle West. He was predeceased by his Mother, Father, two children Daughter Belinda "Bunny" Messick and Son Michael Paul Messick, his brother William Messick and sister Catherine Moffa.
Spike Attended schools in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. His first job was caddying at the Cavalier Hotel when he was 7 and a half years old. He also sold papers in downtown Norfolk and worked for Norfolk Newspapers, then later joined the Merchant Marines during WWII.
Spike was drafted during the Korean conflict and served two years in the Army 11th Airborne in 1950-1952, made 22 jumps and was promoted to Sargents before he left the service. His professional journey was marked by dedication and excellence in becoming an apprentice Pipefitter at Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he advanced to Group Superintendent of Structural Group then to Group Superintendent of Mechanical Group. He worked at NNSY for 35 years where he made significant contributions, including countless notable achievements. Spike's Work was recognized with Awards/Recognitions, and he was highly respected by his colleagues and peers.
Spike was a devoted spouse and parent and is survived by Margaret Briley Messick, his wife of over 60 years, a son Patrick B. Messick, Grandchildren Madison P. Messick (Jonathon), of Norfolk, VA, Briley M. Messick and Luther "Spike" M. Messick of Virginia Beach, VA, Step-Daughter Debra Hogan of Norfolk, VA, Daughter By Marriage Julie Bobka, of Virginia, and a niece Catherine Messick, of Virginia Beach, as well as a host of many more nieces and nephews. Spike was an avid Golfer and during his lifetime had 7 Holes- In-One! He was a member of Chesapeake Athletic Club. His love of golfing was infectious and brought joy to all who knew him.
