Our beloved father and grandfather, Johannes Hian Tjo Tan, M.D. (retired), went to be with the Lord on March 27, 2025, at the age of 93 yrs old, at his residence in Chesapeake, VA. He was born on April 29, 1931 and a native of Indonesia.
Johannes Tan is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Joen Tan. Survivors include his daughter and son: Dr. Regina Tan-Camacho with husband, Phil of Chesapeake, VA and Andy Tan with wife Nancy of Charlottesville, VA. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Stephen Tan, Phoenix Camacho, and Alex Tan.
Johannes (‘Papi’) was the 5th and only son of his predeceased parents: Bie Tjee and Sien Tiang Tan, of Semarang, Indonesia. Johannes was a professor in Histology, a Red Cross director, and also had a thriving private medical clinic in Indonesia. He immigrated to the USA with his family in 1973. He soon became a board-certified Pathologist and worked initially in Lorain, Ohio for 7 yrs then left to pursue work at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. For almost a decade, Johannes was the center’s Lab Director and the Red Cross director. Then at the age of 65, he first retired in Charlottesville VA, then moved to Chesapeake, VA to be surrounded by his family and grandchildren.
The interment for his ashes will be held the morning of April 9th at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk, VA.
