JoAnn Bailey Martin

JoAnn was born to the late Rachel Craven and William Gary Bailey in Charleston, South Carolina, the youngest of five children. She graduated from Rivers High School and was a cheerleader for Porter Military Academy in Charleston, SC. She married the love of her life, Lee M Martin Jr on November 9, 1952 enjoying 70 plus years of marriage.

She was an active member of Ashley River Baptist Church serving as Youth Leader, VBS Volunteer, Sunday School Teacher, and Adult Choir member/soloist. She especially loved singing cantatas. She was a member of The Charleston Choral Society and studied voice under Anna Hazel Mims and Rev. William Gregory. The singing that brought her the most joy was singing duets with her "Hubcap"!

JoAnn worked at the Naval Supply Center Charleston in Charleston, SC. She retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia in January 1993 as Supervisory Supply Systems Analyst, Code 500N.1

JoAnn is survived by her husband, Lee Melvin Martin Jr; brother, William Gary Bailey Jr; children, Lee Melvin "Mark" Martin III (Virginia) and Yvonne Sheri Martin Gray; grandchildren, Gordon Lee Martin, Amanda Marie Martin Jones, Amy Leigh Gray Moxley (Greg), Sarah Elizabeth Gray Mikac (Andrew), and Jeffrey Hugh Gray Jr; great-grandchildren, Alton Leigh Moxley, Gray Jerome Moxley, Theodore Taylor Jones, Frances Ann Mikac, Rosemary Jo Mikac, another Mikac arriving soon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is predeceased by her parents William Gary and Rachel Craven Bailey, and sisters Helen Beatrice Bailey Barwick (Henry), Thelma Theresa Bailey Graham (EJ Graham), Ernestine Cheri Bailey McDaniel (Douglas), sisters-in-law, Kathleen Causey Bailey, and Merrile Aruth Martin Kinard (Ray).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Music Ministry of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church.

There will be a Celebration of Life for JoAnn at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 233 Mann Drive Chesapeake, Virginia 23322 Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 10:00 AM, reception following in Taylor Hall. There will be no inurnment service.
