James Cornell Kerbin

James C. Kerbin of Virginia Beach, VA passed away July 11, 2026 at the age of 93 after a nearly decade-long battle with Parkinson's. Born in Montclair, NJ on February 6, 1933, Jim grew up in and around Millbrook, NY. After graduating from Millbrook School and Dartmouth College, he served as a Weapons Officer in the US Navy.

Following his naval discharge, Jim moved to St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, where he became the headmaster of the Tamarind School. Though Jim's early adult life was marred by the tragic loss of his son Eben and later his step-daughter Stacey, his journey illustrates a man defined by resilience and tenacity.

In 1982, after moving back to New York to teach Millbrook School, Jim married his wife Carol. With Carol and their son Nathaniel, Jim moved to Virginia Beach in 1993, where he completed a distinguished teaching career with 25 years of service at Cape Henry Collegiate School. Equally at home at the chalkboard in a high-level math class, in the director's chair of a CHCS theater production, and in the stands cheering on his beloved Dolphins' sports teams, Jim was more than just a teacher – he was a pillar of the community.

His memory is cherished by his family and friends, who will remember him as the dedicated music-playing, sailboat-helming, bicycle-riding man that he was.

Jim is survived by his wife Carol, son Nathaniel, and grandson James. His extended family includes sisters Sue Jane and Priscilla; brothers-in-law Steve, Tom, and John; daughter-in-law Mimi; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Jim's life and legacy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 14, 2026 at Eastern Shore Chapel (2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454.) All are welcome.
