Inga Martinson Schmid, 84, of Williamsburg, VA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, after a brief time in the hospital. Born on February 13, 1940, in Long Island, NY, she was the beloved only child of Svea and Erik Martinson.
An avid reader, Inga earned her M.A. from SUNY Albany in 1961 before beginning her career as an English teacher at a junior high school. A few years later, she met a fellow teacher—who happened to be a math and physics instructor—at a party. Within a year, they were married and soon welcomed their first son. As her husband David pursued a career as a nuclear engineer with Westinghouse, their family moved several times before eventually settling in Williamsburg, VA, for their retirement.
Inga had many passions, including bridge, gardening, decorating, and traveling. In her later years, she found joy in playing Words with Friends and watching history documentaries. Above all, her greatest love was for her family—especially her sons and granddaughters, whom she cherished deeply.
Inga is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, David; her three sons, Karl and his wife Laurie of Lopatcong, NJ, Frederic and his wife Lora of Reading, PA, and Kurt of Williamsburg, VA; and four adored granddaughters, Liviya, Leah, Larisa, and Laila.
A celebration of life will be held in Williamsburg on Sunday, February 16, 2025, from 1 - 4 pm at Ford’s Colony Swim and Tennis Clubhouse, 165 St. Andrew’s Drive, Williamsburg, VA 23188. Family and friends are encouraged to bring their best memories of Inga to share. Since Ford’s Colony is a gated community, please email [email protected] of your intention to attend because a list of attendees must be given to the gatehouse for entry. A burial service will take place later in July at Hillside Cemetary in Chilton, WI.
