Born with gifted hands and a generous heart, Herb spent more than 40 years as a master carpenter, building custom homes and leaving his craftsmanship in every beam and board he touched. He was happiest when sharing what he knew—whether coaching baseball when his boys were young, teaching Hank how to work on vehicles, or simply lending a hand to anyone who needed him.
Herb loved the outdoors and the simple joys of life: deer hunting, fishing, attending mud bogs, caring for his American Bulldogs, and relaxing in his swing beneath the pecan tree. He cherished getting everyone together for Thanksgiving dinner and often reminisced about racing bikes in his younger years. Above all, he was a devoted father with a huge heart and a deep love for his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Dozier; his sons, Hunter Smith, Herbert “Herbie” Smith (“Lil Bug”), and Hank Smith (“Turtle”); his brother, Marvin Smith; his sister, Debbie McKenzie; his god‑daughters, Coral Cason and MaKayla Thomas; and life long friend, Cassandra (Cissy) Cason, who was like a sister. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored him.
Herb is preceded in death by his mother, Vandy Smith; his father, Williard Smith Sr.; his brothers, Williard Smith Jr. and David Smith; and his beloved dogs, Pork Chop and Chopper.
A celebration of Herb’s life will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 11am at Creeds Church of Christ, 5500 Morris Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23457. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the life of a man whose kindness, humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed.
