In the heart of Long Beach, California, a remarkable life began on January 26, 1948, when Max and Margie Borton welcomed their son, David, into the world. Throughout his life, David was guided by a thirst for knowledge, unwavering kindness, and deep devotion to his family and faith.
David excelled academically from an early age. He graduated as valedictorian from Barry Robinson in Norfolk, VA in 1965. He continued his education at Old Dominion University, graduating magna cum laude in 1981 and earning his master's degree in 1984. He distinguished himself as one of the university's top geology students.
David entered the Army in 1972 and served for two years in Stuttgart, Germany, as a legal clerk. He later worked for the Navy at NARF in Aircraft Quality Assurance. After graduating from ODU, he joined Shell Oil Offshore, Inc. in New Orleans. His passion for geology eventually brought him back to Virginia, where he helped establish the State Water Control Board, now the Department of Environmental Quality. He later served as a geologist for the federal government.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, David found peace and joy in nature. He hiked the trails of Virginia Beach and beyond, and he sometimes enjoyed long, peaceful rides on his Harley. A master diver, he treasured scuba adventures from the Bahamas to Hawaii. Reading was a lifelong passion; after becoming a devout Christian in 2003, the Bible became his most treasured book.
David's gentle nature was reflected in his kindness toward all living creatures, and he chose to become a vegetarian 37 years ago. His intelligence and accomplishments never overshadowed his humility; to those around him, he remained a deeply kind soul.
David's life was enriched by the love of this wife, Lou. Their 50 year friendship and love story included 48 years of marriage. His sister Jana; his brother, Rand; and his many nieces , nephews, Christian friends, and close companions were all blessed by his presence.
David was an active member of Spring Branch Community Church until the pandemic. He later attended Grace Bible Church and participated in a men's Bible study group, reflecting his enduring commitment to faith and community.
David's ashes will be scattered at sea by the U.S. Navy in a private ceremony. Neptune Cremation Service is handling the arrangements. His legacy of love, intellect, and unwavering kindness will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
