Tom Bonner passed in the arms of the Lord on February 24th at the age of 86.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Elaine Nelson Bonner; his parents, Eula Prince and Carroll Bonner; his aunt and uncle, Arthur and Jean Prince; his dear brother, George Pryor Bonner; brother-in-law, George Carey Nelson III; and his nephew, Michael Bonner.
Tom is survived by his loving brother, Keith Bonner; his devoted children, Thomas Bonner and Beth Reece; their spouses, whom he loved as his own, Heather Bonner and Mark Reece; and his cherished grandchildren, Margaret, Abigail, Caroline, and Sawyer. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Carol Bonner and Terry Nelson; his cousin, Jim Prince; and his nephews, Pryor Bonner, Matthew Bonner, George Carey Nelson IV, Patrick Nelson, and their families.
Born in Cairo, GA, Tom came from humble beginnings and lived a life full of purpose and impact. A modern-day Renaissance man, he was intelligent, athletic, strong-willed, a free thinker, an artist, and a progressive ahead of his time. Above all, family was everything to him, and he was a devoted father and grandfather.
Tom was a humanitarian at heart, dedicating his life to serving and protecting others. He championed racial and gender equality and spent most of his career with the Red Cross. He began in disaster management, being the first to arrive on the scene after a natural disaster. He served internationally during the Vietnam War and ultimately retired as an executive leader with the organization.
In retirement, Tom continued his lifelong love of learning, traveled extensively with his wife, and cherished every moment with his family. Through his life of service, he reflected God’s love for all people.
Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Trinity Presbyterian Church of Asheville community. Their kindness and generosity have profoundly touched our hearts, providing unwavering love and support—especially in these last few years of Tom’s life.
True to his practical nature, Tom always said not to spend money on his behalf (and to put it in your retirement instead). However, for those who feel led, donations may be made in his memory to Trinity Presbyterian Church of Asheville.
As per his wishes, there will be only a brief graveside service for immediate family—lasting no more than 3 to 5 minutes, just as he requested.
