Carlyn was born October 12,1929 in Dracut, Massachusetts as the youngest of six children to Louis and Grace Eklund. She attended Goodhue Elementary and graduated from Dracut High School in 1947. Her career in nursing began at Lowell General Hospital, where she earned her RN and met her lifelong friends, Irene and Jackie. Later, the three worked at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital, where Carlyn assisted in brain surgeries.
Carlyn’s early life was filled with cross country road trips, living her 20’s in Boston and New York while “sipping green grasshoppers at the Rainbow Room” with her best friends, and finished her career of service through nursing as a traveling nurse in 1986. These adventures later turned into inspiration for all of Carlyn’s grandchildren to live their lives as full as she did.
In 1958, in a blind date set up by her sister-in-law Mary, Carlyn met her future husband, Bernard Miller and the two were wed in August of 1959. Their love story was one that grew and was strengthened through “huckle buckle beanstalks”, the many cross-country camping trips with Paul and Louise in tow, and Carlyn’s legendary chocolate chip cookies. The two were together for 54 years and were the epitome of a true love story.
She is survived by her children Paul (Tamara) and Louise (Norman), four grandchildren, Casey (Jackie), Carlyn, Alissa (John), and Grace, one great grandchild, Alice, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Hampton Virginia on Monday, January 20 at 11:00 a.m.
