Jim was born in Denver, Co December 27, 1931. He passed away June 30. Jim was a kind, Gentle, laid back guy who loved people and enjoyed participating in so many things. He is survived by his wife, Joan and 3 grown children, Cass, Matt and Melissa, and 5 grandchildren.
He graduated from East Denver High then went to Dartmouth. There he was an English major until his senior year when he completed his first year of the Tuck Business school. He also was a brother of Phi Epsilon and a member of the Dragon Honorary Society.
After graduation Jim served as Central Intelligence Corp of the U.S.
Army from 1954 to 1956. After the army Jim completed his MBA degree at New York University School of Business and at the same time worked for a Wall Street Brokerage Firm. In 1957 he embarked on a "normal" career with the investment firm, Loomis Sales. Be spent three years in San Francisco and then· returned to the Boston Headquarters as a member of the Institutional Department. In 1971 Jim's career went off the "normal" track. Just 2 years after becoming a partner of Loomis Sales Jim and his family of 5 left Boston for the little ski town of Crested Butte, CO where he purchased the Elk Mountain Lodge. The motivation was an escape from normal, a new adventure and to return to his beloved western USA.
Jim turned in his three piece business suit for a Mexican serape and became the breakfast cook at the Lodge. All seemed well as the lodge flourished, the children loved the new location. Unfortunately, disagreements between Jim and his first wife led to a separation and finally a divorce in 1978.
To even things up the lodge was sold. Jim entered the real estate business with two other partner. The new business did very well until 1982. At that time extremely high mortgage interest rates and a drop in oil prices killed our real estate business. The 3 partners sold the business for a low price and went in opposite directions. While considering what to do next Jim recalled his professor, Jose Arce, during class be often sung the praises of Costa Rica his beautiful native country. For 9 months he took in the wonders of this gem of a country. Then he got serious and purchased a pizza restaurant. Here he served as maître de, practiced Spanish and made a living.
than 2 years an opportunity presented itself and Jim sold the pizza restaurant and returned to his childhood home in Denver to spend time with his elderly mother. Within a short period of time he went out one evening and met "the love of his life" Mary Joan Frieouf. They were married in December of 1989. A few years later, they moved to Green Valley, Arizona. Here they developed a great system of renting their home for 2 months in the winter and then traveled in style to many
distant locations. Mary Joan had spent 33 years with United Airlines and retired with travel privileges for both...
