Michael Heimbuch passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2026 after a valiant battle with Parkinson's disease. The son of Edward and Doleen Heimbuch, Michael was born in Massillon, Ohio 84 years ago. After graduating from Washington High School there, Michael attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
In 1964, Michael was stationed with the U.S. Army in peacetime Korea, serving for two years.
Upon returning to civilian life, Michael and his partner, Mitchell Bunting, embarked on a new journey in Tucson, Arizona. Together, they ran Books Brothers Bookstore on Speedway from 1976 to 1990. The bookstore was more than just a business; it was a gathering place for the community. Michael and Mitch's partnership extended beyond business—they were life partners for 50 years, legally marrying in September 2008, a milestone that celebrated their enduring commitment to one another.
Michael's dedication to his community was evident in his role as a founding member of the Tucson AIDS Project, which later evolved into the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation. Moreover, Michael was proud of achieving sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous in 1986, and then helping others with their steps.
In 2006, Michael became a Master Gardener, channeling his love for nature into nurturing the orchards at the Tumacacori Mission and his own backyard oasis.
Michael was a gentle man, admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his devoted husband, Mitch Bunting.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Michael's honor to the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
