She is survived by her husband, Charlie Hookway; two brothers, Dan and John; and a sister, Bonnie. She was preceded in death by husbands David Vandersteeg and Richard Sluis, both of the Chicago area. She leaves behind her four children, Mark, Ricky, Donald and Rhonda Sue. Also, six children from her second family, Steve, Larry, Colleen, Debbie, Donna and Terry; and three children from her third family, Teri, Mike and Todd. There also are numerous spouses, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all across the country.
Marjorie was born in the Chicago area on Sept. 25, 1940. Upon graduation from high school, she married, bore her four children, divorced and then remarried - acquiring a second family of six children.
Always a hard worker, she worked as a waitress to support her four children, before her remarriage. After being a parent to a total of ten children, she attended college, acquired a private pilot’s license and began a career in the travel business. Upon the death of her second husband, she worked for airlines, until 1994, when she moved from Chicago to Tucson.
After working for several airlines, she began her career as a travel consultant with Bon Voyage Travel in Tucson and Green Valley. In 2010, she met Charlie Hookway, a client with the travel office. Their relationship immediately blossomed and they were married in 2011. Marjorie retired from Bon Voyage in 2012.
Throughout her working life, Marjorie traveled extensively for both personal and professional reasons. After marrying Charlie, they became travel partners, taking a cruise ship from Australia across the Pacific to Vancouver, taking river cruises in Europe, cruising to Mexico and the Caribbean and realizing a dream for Marjorie, by spending two weeks in South Africa. In between, they found time to visit family and friends across the United States. Her love for her husband and family never wavered throughout her life, nor did her complete faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Marjorie was a good and authentic person, who always looked to the needs of others, before herself. She unfailingly spoke well of others and prayed daily for the well-being of her husband, her family and her friends. Her kind and caring manner touched the lives of others, wherever she went. Her passing, into the hands of God, leaves a huge hole in the lives of all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life for Marjorie will be held at Sahuarita Baptist Church, 2875 E. Sahuarita Road, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018.
In lieu of cards or flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Sahuarita Baptist Church. P.O. Box 930, Sahuarita, Arizona 85629.
