Carol Lou (Hessen) Skomars died peacefully at home in Green Valley, Arizona on Sunday, December 3, 2017, after a long and brave struggle with cardiac disease. She is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Duane E. Skomars; son, Kevin (Jean); daughter, Kim; grandchildren, Jessi Ronning-Rolland (Dan), Alexander Skomars, Kyle Skomars (Wendy); and great-grandsons, Hudson and Sawyer Skomars. Carol was born in Two Harbors, MN in 1936 to Dagny and Nels Hessen. She graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1954 and the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1972, with a Biology Major and Library Science Minor. In mid-career, she earned her Masters in Library Science/Media, again at UMD. She held various teaching and library positions in the Duluth Public School system, culminating as Head Librarian at Duluth Central High School. She retired in 1998 in Green Valley, Arizona. Carol excelled at designing and building several homes, with her husband, Duane. She loved Duplicate Bridge, as well as traveling, both internationally and as navigator in their RV - crisscrossing North America. She instilled a love of learning and life enrichment in her children and grandchildren and will very much be missed.
