Barbara Lee Wernick, 82, was the last child born to her parents, Sarah B. Ellais and Harry Wernick on July 7, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York. After a long, courageous battle with cancer, Barbara Lee Wernick, formerly of Brooklyn, New York and Delray Beach, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. As she had wished, Barbara died in the comfort of her family’s home in Sahuarita, Arizona. Barbara lived in Brooklyn for a major part of her life until 2006 when she moved to Delray Beach, Florida. She settled in Kings Point and enjoyed a beautiful retirement playing her favorite card games, Mah Jongg, attending shows, dances and the casinos with her friends. She also enjoyed her ceramic classes. Barbara had one son, Richard Harris and raised him as a single parent. She worked two jobs to support herself and her son while attending college. Barbara was a para-professional in the New York City school system which she retired from and worked for the Bay News part-time for a few years. In 2008, her son Richard and daughter-in-law Danielle made Barbara a grandmother. Twins Sarah Mary and Harrison Daniel were born. As any proud grandmother would be, she loved to spoil them dearly. Then, in 2015, Barbara had two additional grandchildren, Benjamin William and Evan Marshall, to spoil as well. Barbara travelled back and forth from Florida to Arizona to spend every moment she could with her grandchildren. She finally moved to Arizona to be with her family in October of 2015. Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Sarah Ellias and Harry Wernick of Brooklyn, New York, her sister Thelma Greenbaum of Brooklyn, New York, and her brother Martin Wernick of Long Island, New York. Survivors include her son, Richard Wernick, her daughter-in-law Danielle M. Vargas-Wernick, granddaughter Sarah Mary, grandsons Harrison Daniel, Benjamin William and Evan Marshall Wernick of Sahuarita, Arizona, as well as her nephews Albert Greenbaum of Staten Island, New York and Edward Greenbaum of Long Island, New York. Services and interment will be held at Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery, 18751 South La Canada Drive, Sahuarita, Arizona at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.
