It is with deep sorrow and unexplainable joy that I announce Steven Walter Speier is no longer of this world. On Wednesday, March 25, 2026 Steve closed his eyes of brilliant blue, while in the presence of those he loved only to open them moments later with full view of our Lord.
Born October 2, 1939 in New York, he lived most of his early years with his parents Hans and Lisa in Washington DC, spending summers in his beloved New Hampshire. He later moved to Santa Monica when his father went to work for the Rand Corporation. He subsequently graduated from UCLA. Shortly after college, he met the most important and influential individual of his life, Nancy de Packh. Following a brief courtship, they became engaged prior to his leaving for the Vietnam War as a member of the US Navy. Upon his return from Vietnam, he married Nancy on October 2, 1966, just prior to being stationed in San Diego at the Fleet Computer Programming Center. After he was released from active duty, he began his 38-year career as a computer programmer primarily with Litton Industries, in Woodland Hills. He was hired mostly because he was a Life Master Bridge player, not his degree.
The greatest milestone in Steve’s life occurred shortly after adopting his older son Jon, in 1973 and prior to the adoption of his younger son Luke, in the fall of 1977. Steve made a sound decision to follow and live his life for Jesus. Although quiet in demeanor, he was bold in his conviction for loving the downtrodden and living a life of integrity. No soul was ever too gone, too difficult, or too different to embrace as a familiar face. Steve never cursed, seldom raised his voice, and demonstrated patience throughout his life.
Along with Nancy, he loved: attending concerts and music festivals, baking for Christmas, doing beautiful needlepoint designs, participating in church events including a prison ministry, hiking in the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains near Downieville, traveling the world, photographing people and places and catching a live sports event (Dodgers and UCLA). He loved spending family time with his wonderful sons Jon and Luke and his beloved grandkids Caleb and Lauren. Many of his most joyful times were spent with the Leak family of Ohio, who he considered relatives via Jesus. As a devout follower of Jesus Christ, he attended Church in the Canyon (aka: Calabasas Presbyterian Church) where he served as a Deacon and Bible study leader and BSF.
Steve was blessed with a beautiful life and was a living example of servanthood.
Survived by his wife, Nancy, sons Jon and Luke and his grandchildren Caleb and Lauren
