Sheldon (Shell) Liebowitz was born in Brooklyn in 1947 and grew up in New Jersey. After obtaining his undergraduate degree from Drew University and his Master’s Degree from Fordham University, he moved to Manhattan where he met his wife of 40 years, Terri. Shell and Terri remained married for over 40 years, moving to Long Island to raise two daughters - Meisha and Becky - and own auto parts stores. During these years, Shell was active playing racquetball (it was the 80’s after all) and going sailing weekly around the Long Island sound with a group of friends. Although an active member of his synagogue, he was also happy to dress up as Santa for celebrating friends!
Around 2015, Shell and Terri retired from the auto parts business and parted ways so they could both explore the next chapters of their lives. For a few years, Shell lived in South Florida to be closer to his brothers, Steve and Sandy Joe. Then in 2018, he moved to Los Angeles to be closer to Meisha, or more likely, his grandkids Dylan and Cece —- who may or may not have been more entertaining than his brothers. He remained in LA until his recent passing.
Although he could be shy at first, he was a kind and charming guy who just needed encouragement to make new connections. Luckily, he found this within his apartment community where he formed a core group of friends and met his partner, Mona. Together they made new memories and all shared a lifetime of stories — sailing trips he took around the world, favorite concerts he’d been to — discussing books (Mark Twain and Stephen King were favorites), movies (classic thrillers including Hitchcock were always a winner), favorite kosher deli meals (depends on mood - pastrami or corned beef) or bragging about grandchildren.
Until his last few months, Shell remained independent, enjoying retirement the way he always intended —- watching tv, eating Cherry Garcia ice cream, seeing his grandchildren, and doing whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
Shell is survived by his brothers, Steven and Sandy Joe of Miami Florida, his daughter Meisha and his son in law - both of Los Angeles, his daughter Rebecca of Alexandria, Virginia and his grandchildren Dylan and Cece.
