Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Reuben moved to Los Angeles as a teenager. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from UCLA and a master’s degree in library science from USC. He spent his career with the Los Angeles Unified School District as a teacher and high school librarian, serving for many years as the librarian at Monroe High School. He had a lifelong interest in libraries and learning and was known for his curiosity and commitment to sharing knowledge. In addition to his work in schools, he taught calligraphy and handmade greeting card classes to adults and children.
Together with his wife, Zel, he co-founded Vegetarians in Paradise, a widely read online magazine celebrating plant-based living in Los Angeles. For more than 25 years, they shared their vegan discoveries and recognized those advancing vegan cuisine, culture, community, research, advocacy, and science. They delighted in exploring the Los Angeles food scene, traveling far to try new restaurants and returning often to longtime favorites Vinh Loi Tofu and Shojin, where they were treated like family.
He was active in the senior learning group SAGE for more than 25 years, leading discussions, planning field trips, helping others learn to use technology, and delivering engaging and provocative presentations. In 2024, the SAGE community celebrated his many contributions and his humanity at a well-attended event—one he was able to attend and enjoy.
Reuben loved spending time with friends and family, especially neighbors Joan and Larry Harmell.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Zel Allen; his children Chuck Allen, Bruce Allen, Amy Allen, and Gregg Allen; his son-in-law Michael Wiklund; and his daughter-in-law Jen Mathews.
The family thanks caregivers Jesus Bisda and Macario Lampa for their compassionate care and support.
