

Dr. Gibson was born and raised in Gibson, North Carolina (Scotland County). The fourth of five children and the first from his family to attend college. He received BS (‘61 Magna Cum Laude), MS (‘63) and PhD (‘66) degrees from North Carolina State University (NCSU). He began his career at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) in 1967 where he worked as a Professor and Department Chair until his retirement in 2010.
Under his leadership, the UAH Mathematics Department grew from a baccalaureate program to offer a PhD in Applied Mathematics. His research in Applied Mathematics included 100+ publications in renown journals as well as numerous articles he reviewed and refereed.
He was preceded in death by his parents Murray Peter and Grace Butler Gibson and siblings Annie Brown and Clayton Gibson. He is survived by his wife. Dr. Gail Gibson, his daughter, Anne (David) Bartholomew, his grandchildren Paige (Kyle) Almekinder and Brent Bartholomew, and his sisters, Catherine Howard and Maxine (Johnny) Edwards.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Dr. Peter M. Gibson Mathematics Scholarship. Established in 2022 at NCSU, the scholarship supports deserving undergraduate Mathematics students at his beloved alma mater.
