Joanne, lovingly known as Joannie, was born on October 16, 1952, to Rosemary and Warren Hovorka. Joannie was the oldest of six siblings, and she took great pride in her big, fun family.
Joannie dedicated her professional life to caring for others as a registered nurse, specializing in oncology. She brought compassion, gentleness, and dignity to patients during some of their most difficult moments, leaving a lasting impact on all who were fortunate to be in her care.
In 1982, she welcomed her first daughter, Erin Marie, followed by Kathryn Emily two years later. Joannie was the ultimate “girl mom,” delighting in all things beautiful, feminine, and elegant. She was also insistent on good grades, manners, and thoughtful conversation, famously requiring daily newspaper reading and lively discussion of current events at the dinner table.
Joannie found joy in giving back to her community, volunteering her time to support musical theatre, foster children, and victim advocacy efforts. Her positivity and gratitude guided her, and she lived with a desire to uplift others. She was always ready with a genuine compliment and had a gift for making people feel great about themselves.
To her four beloved grandchildren, she was “Mama Jo” or “Jo Jo” and her quick wit, sense of humor, and love of travel, music, sports, and family lives on in them.
Her devotion to friendship was evident in her final days, as her home filled with dear friends who gathered to share stories, laughter, flowers, and music. It was a true reflection of the life she built and the love she gave so freely.
Joannie’s warm and generous spirit will be deeply missed. She will be remembered on every dance floor and in every sunset. We will always believe in magic.
