Throughout his long battle with colon cancer he remained strong. He waved off his pain as nothing more than a nuisance, not wanting to be the center of attention because of his illness . He remained brave and strong until the very end.
On August 18,1975 Jim came into this life a happy, beautiful baby to his parents Steve and Cindy Mastro. As the first grandchild on both sides, he was cherished by all. Raised in Camarillo, California, Jim was very active in sports, playing baseball, football, and soccer. He also wrestled in high school. He had a love for the ocean and surfed as often as he could. He also had a love for other water sports, like waterskiing and wakeboarding, showing off his skills on family vacations.
Shortly after graduating from Camarillo High School he was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. The community rallied around him providing much support. In 1994 he had a bone marrow transplant that saved his life. Jim showed grace and courage in his recovery, and also used humor to get through the tough days.
He went on to graduate from San Diego State University with a BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences with an emphasis in Social Science. Jim met the love of his life, Michelle, through a mutual friend. They used to joke that it was “love at third meeting.” They were married in 2007 and in 2009 they had their beautiful son, Owen.
Jim joined the family business with Mrs. Riggs Sandwiches and worked alongside his dad and cousin, Bud. He went on to run the business after his dad retired. Hard work was in his blood. In 2023, cancer had returned in the form of stage 4 colon cancer. He fought valiantly.
He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and love for his family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Bonnie Mastro, Elizabeth Ridge, and his uncle Bill Dailey. He is survived by his wife Michelle, son Owen, parents Steve and Cindy Mastro, brothers Jason Mastro(Malia), Jeremy Mastro and Josh Mastro(Rachel), nieces Kambria, Remington and Dakota Mastro, and nephew Colt Mastro.
A Celebration of Life will held on May 10, 2025 @ 11:00 am Herford Residence, 964 Amber Drive, Camarillo, 93010.
