Herb was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the second born son of Paula and Fred Klein. His parents had fled to the United States from their home in Czechoslovakia prior to the German occupation. Fred was a cabinet maker and Paula was a homemaker. During his early life, the family relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. Herb always admired his older brother, Michael, tremendously. He attended Alameda High School before pursuing higher education at UC Berkeley and later earning his law degree from UCLA Law School in 1970. His career led him to serve at the Labor Department and later at Cox Castle and Nicholson, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.
Herb and Marla met in 1982 at a singles dance at Mountain Gate Country Club. They married by the water in 1984 and then settled in Calabasas where they spent the next 35 years. They were active members of Temple Aliyah and made lifelong friends in the community. Herb and Marla retired and relocated to Oxnard.
In his 60s he began his battle with Parkinson's Disease. He received excellent care from Marla, his caregivers, and Livingston Memorial for both palliative and hospice care.
Herb was honest to the core. He never hesitated to voice his opinions or share a crude joke. His reliability and generosity were evident in both his professional life and personal relationships. Above all else, he valued his family deeply.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marla of 40 years; daughters, Stacy (TJ Bittel) of Rye, NY and Laura (Corey LaHerran) of San Diego; and his cherished grandchildren, Rafe and Archie Bittel, and Wren LaHerran. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews. Herb was predeceased by his parents, Paula and Fred Klein, as well as his brother, Michael Klein.
Herb’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Livingston Memorial in Ventura at https://www.lmvna.org
