George Colman passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026 at the age of 83. He was known as a respected attorney, a leader in his community, and an advocate for nature and wildlife preservation. To his family, he was an extraordinary companion, advisor, and champion with endless love to give.
Born December 17, 1942 in Bronx, NY to Sally and Lewis Colman, George was the youngest of three children and grew up admiring his sisters, Judy and Naomi. They moved to Queens where George attended elementary school through college, and enjoyed a life filled with family, friends, beloved pets, and sports. An avid baseball player, George excelled at the sport and at 18 years old, qualified to try out for the New York Yankees’ farm team. He may not have made the team but he remained a lifelong Yankee fan and never missed a playoff.
George graduated from Queens College in 1964 and received his Juris Doctorate from Brooklyn Law School in 1967. He was in practice for 58 years as a member of the New York and California State Bars, as well as the United States Supreme Court, Federal District Courts in New York and California, and United States Tax Court.
He married Kathi Geiger in 1973 and they raised their family in Jackson Heights, and then Glen Cove, Long Island. George joined Hayt, Hayt & Landau, where he became partner and opened the firm’s first office in California. He moved his family to Los Angeles in 1981, and ultimately became a resident of Agoura Hills in 1993.
George was a founding partner of Stephenson, Acquisto & Colman, where he remained ‘Of Counsel’ until his passing. During his tenure, he represented hundreds of public and private healthcare providers in critical revenue recovery and insurance matters. He was recognized as one of Southern California’s “Super Lawyers”, and one of the top attorneys in Southern California, selected by peer recognition and professional achievement. He served in leadership roles for legal, healthcare and financial management associations, and lectured extensively in his areas of expertise.
He was actively involved with a number of nonprofit institutions and advocacy efforts. Over the years, George served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for St. Francis Medical Center; Chairman of the Task Force for Chronically Homeless Patients in Los Angeles County; Chairman of the Southern California chapter of the Queens College Alumni Association; and notably, as a Member of the Advisory Group for Save LA Cougars, the campaign to support of development and construction of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing in his home community of Agoura Hills.
George lived a life of joy and purpose, dedicating himself to his family, his profession, and the communities he lived in to help make a better life for all. His sense of humor was unparalleled, with a hearty laugh to match; he had a deep appreciation of art and was a talented sculptor; and he was a seasoned traveler inspired by memories of beautiful, historic, and interesting places.
George was predeceased by Kathi, his wife of 49 years. He was the loving father of Jennifer Caroline (husband Michael), Jennifer Lynn (husband Christopher) and David (wife Susan); and proud grandfather of Corynne, Christopher, Charlotte, Vivienne, Sophie, and Myles (wife Ariel).
