

Born on August 24, 1949, in Los Angeles, California, Genie was raised in Eagle Rock, where she graduated from Eagle Rock High School. She carried the spirit of Southern California with her throughout her life—independent, vibrant, and deeply connected to both nature and community.
Genie was a devoted mother to her four children—Shannon Gates, Morgan Gates, Erin Gates, and Justin Gates—whom she raised with pride and unwavering love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, EJ Stremler and Mary MacLaren Stremler.
Genie is survived by her children, Shannon Gates, Morgan Gates, Erin Gates, and Justin Gates; their spouses, Mark Sohay, Jason Cooney, and Kierstyn Gates; her grandchildren, Erin Cooney, McKenzie Gates Sohay, and Dane Gates, with one more on the way she was so looking forward to meeting; her sisters, Valerie Snider and Helen Boyd; their spouses, Jeffrey Snider and Curt Betz; and 8 nieces and nephews.
Genie lived a life full of curiosity and adventure. An avid traveler, she explored some of the most extraordinary places on earth, including Alaska, the Amazon, Africa, Antarctica, and Indonesia. She had a deep appreciation for the natural world, which she captured through her work as an outdoor travel photographer, often transforming her images into unique art pieces on redwood burls.
In her younger years, Genie was an avid tennis and golf player, and she carried that same love of movement and the outdoors throughout her life with regular walks and hikes. She found joy in being outside and experiencing the world around her.
Her love for animals was profound—especially her beloved dogs and her special affection for elephants. Genie’s compassion extended to all living things, reflecting her generous and open-hearted nature.
She will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and adventurous spirit. Genie had an infectious smile, a youthful enthusiasm for life, and a remarkable ability to see the very best in everyone she met.
A celebration of Genie’s life will be held at a future date.
