David passed away after sustaining a head injury during a fall. He was 89 years old.
He was born and raised in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. After graduating from the University of Hawaii he moved to California where he worked 34 years as a chemist at the Nestle-Carnation Research Lab.
He is survived by Helen Tanaka Sakai, his wife of 64 years, two children Karen Dreyer (Husband Ed) and Gary Sakai, and two grandsons Eric and Robert Dreyer.
His sister Victoria Sakai and brother Wilfred Sakai live in Hawaii. He is predeceased by four brothers Daniel, Kunio, Hideo and Sadamu, and two sisters Gladys Kaya and Elsie Okata.
Some of the activities and sports he loved and participated in were tennis, volleyball, vegetable gardening, camping at national parks, fishing, birding, backpacking in the high Sierras, bowling league, backyard building projects, ballroom and latin dancing, ping pong, skiing at Mammoth Mountain, and cruising around the world.
In the 1960s he served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Was a well-liked Little League baseball coach and a good dogwalker for Irish Setter Bridget, Golden Retriever Dusty, and Labradoodle Sparky.
