Danny Cruz, was many things. A musician. A teacher. A jokester who could find something funny in just about any situation. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, who left behind a legacy as rich and resonant as the music he devoted his life to.
Born on May 9, 1947, in San Mateo, Rizal, Philippines, Danny’s love for music started at 9 years old when his grandfather Gregorio Carcamo put a flute in his hands. That was all it took. He went on to win the National Young Artist Competition in Manila, performed as a soloist with the Manila Symphony Orchestra, toured the world with the Filipinescas Dance Company, and spent years as a flutist and piccolo player with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He also performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, and spent his later years in Hong Kong teaching the next generation of flutists, many of whom went on to earn the highest honors.
But to those who knew him best, Danny was not defined by the stage. He was the person who held everyone together. He was the one who could walk into any room, in any moment, no -matter how heavy, and find a way to make you laugh. He never took life too seriously, and he never let his family down. Not once.
He is survived by his wife, five children and nine grandchildren, who carry forward not only his name but his music, his humor, and his unshakeable belief that there is always, always room for laughter.
Danny did not just play music. He lived it, shared it, and gave it away freely to everyone lucky enough to sit in his presence.
We will play his music until the notes reach heaven.
Rest easy, until we meet again.
