Robert Edward Gaffney, Jr., aka “Scott” of Mesa, Arizona died at home surrounded by his family, on July 3, 2020 at the age of 81. He was born in San Diego, California but being the son of a career Navy man, he moved around a lot during his younger years. However, Hawaii to him, was always his beloved home. Scott spent many years growing up in Hawaii and attended Punahou School, from which he graduated in the Class of 1958. He went on to Compton College and New Mexico Military Institute, but missed Hawaii and came back to work for the Bank of Hawaii. In 1973, Scott and his family moved to Arizona where he continued his career in the Financial World. He was very active in the Arizona Association of Mortgage Broker and dedicated many hours with the National Association of Mortgage Broker where he was honored with the Broker of the Year award. He served as an Usher at the Redemption Church in Gilbert and belonged to the Elk’s Club. He volunteered countless hours with the Mesa Police Department, The Boys and Girls Club and the Salvation Army and he was a proud Veteran of the United States Army.
Scott loved Cliff Diving, Bull Riding, Sky Diving, but most of all he enjoyed hunting with his children, playing Men’s Softball with his sons and camping with his family. He enjoyed and was very proud of his six grandchildren and was looking forward to his first great-grandson to be born in October. He was a special man who had a dry sense of humor, always complimented people wherever he went and was willing to help everyone.
Scott is survived by: his wife, Jane; his daughter, Kimberly Jane Hartmann; his sons, Timothy Scott Gaffney and Michael Robert Gaffney; six grandchildren, Heather Sirois; Jacob Hartmann; Megan Hartmann; Brendon Gaffney; Hannah and Benjamin Gaffney; a niece, Rebecca Garrett Akkerman in Germany; a nephew, Sean Garrett in Colorado, and another nephew, Pono Garrett.
Scott made many life-long friends and thrived on staying in contact with them. We will miss him very much.
Donations in his memory may be made to Punahou School or the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation. A celebration of Scott’s life is pending.
